In the previous post I showed you pictures from my most recent visit
to this gorgeous piece of land right in the middle of Oakland.
We often take our dogs to this cemetery for their morning walk.
But aside from the sweeping views and peaceful atmosphere,
there are beautiful sculptures and an intense feeling of history.
This cemetery was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted -
who also designed Central Park, among many other projects -
and was begun in 1863. So it is chock full of old sculpture
and headstones from that era.

And here are examples of the statuary that adorns
some of the monuments and mausoleums:
In a reflection of the modern Bay Area, people from all walks of life,
races and religions are buried here.
Asian....
Latino...
Jewish...
and Irish, to name just a few...
And far from being a relic of the past, this cemetery is still in use today. You can still find new graves and flowers covering the final resting places of loved ones:
